Dr. Ademola Nurudeen Olowopopo, who died on Sunday, March 14, 2010, was born on September 15, 1943 in Lagos Island, Nigeria where he had his early education. He later proceeded to the United States where he obtained his Associate Degree in Arts from the Kennedy King College in 1972. He later attended the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle Campus, where obtained his Bachelor of Science in 1973. In 1979, he obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Illinois, College of Medicine and underwent a one year internship in Internal Medicine after which he was certified by the National Board of Examiners in 1980. He completed his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Cook County Hospital, Chicago, IL between 1980 and 1984. He held many positions which include membership of the Board of Directors of several professional and community organizations including the Provident Foundation, American Medical Association, American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists,the Lagosians of Chicago, Africa International House (AIH), Nigerian-American Forum (NAF), Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA), and the Nigerian Community in Chicagoland (NCC) to name a few. In 2007, Late Dr. Olowopopo was named as one of the most influential in "Who's Who in Black Chicago". Before returning to Nigeria to serve his fatherland, Dr. Olowopopo spearheaded several "Medical Missions of Mercy" which involved bringing Nigerian and other medical experts in the diaspora to Lagos to offer medical care services including surgical operations to thousands of Lagosians free of charge. Late Dr. Olowopopo is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cilla Olowopopo and children, Fausat Oshinusi and Sherifat Olowopopo. He also left behind three grandchildren, Raheem, Qudus, and Charles. |
